...formerly known as the Yellow Rose Cafe. I'll preface this with the fact that we'd only eaten there once before when the line for the buffet was too long. Here's a mini-Trip Report.
By golly, this was some good grub!
The new Texas Star is pretty much the old Yellow Rose with a new sign and new menu. I can't say for sure how many of the items are new, but I did have more trouble choosing this time. My fiance had the 8oz Queen cut of the prime rib for $6.99. A note here: She could have ordered the "special" for a dollar more and had the exact same food. I guess it's a "profit special" for Texas. :-) I finally settled on a cup of chili ($2.29) and the Chicken Fried Chicken sandwich for $6.99.
Service was slow, but Angie was nice enough. The "regulars" in the next booth were happy enough with her. Another thing they didn't change was the staffing level, although I doubt this is by choice! They just don't have enough people. The food arrived amazingly quickly, though. Pamela was happy with the clam chowder and my chili was mighty fine, but just a tad greasy. They serve it with just the right amount of onions and cheese to make it downright tasty. Any chili lover would be happy with this and it might just convert a few folks along the way.
The entrees arrived amazingly quickly considering the hectic pace. Someone brought me a pitcher of Mountain Dew so I wouldn't run out again. That won some definite tip points! Pam thought her prime rib was fantastic, although the potato was 87% done. The replacement mashed potatoes and brown gravy were good.
A few words about my sandwich:
The Chicken Fried Chicken Sandwich is a chicken breast fried like a chicken
fried steak, topped with two pieces of bacon, a sliced avocado, and wrapped
by a fancy bun. The avocado made it sound like this sandwich is the result
of a trainwreck between two servers
. "You got your country food in my California food!" and "You got your California food in my country food!"
(My apologies to the Reese's and Breathe Right folks.)
After you add the mayo and your choice of lettuce, onion, and tomato which were served on the plate, it takes a few bites (which are good) to work into "the good stuff", but when you do, you'll be well rewarded. The whole is definitely more than the sum of the parts. The salt and pepper flavor of the breading melds with the creamy avocado to create a new entity of taste which only leaves you wanting more.
All that for only $7. :-) I just love little surprises like that.
The dessert menu remained unexamined. I couldn't even finish that sandwich, let alone tackle anything sweet.
While the kids ate at Fatburger, I managed to hit three 4K's, one of which being on 4s! (Yee haw!)
On the 10/8 Bonus Poker nickel machine! (Oh...)
Which turned my $10 into $20! (Woo hoo!)
...and let me cover Pam's losses. *sigh*
It's still better than losing, but there ought to be a law against missing a royal by one card on EIGHT different occasions! My heart couldn't take the breakneck pace.
The evening ended at home as the Evil Blue Scourge, the Black Dealers of Death, and Red Spawn of Hell Armies with the seemingly loaded white dice tried to defeat my Valient Boys in Brown and claim their rightful homelands of Africa, Australia, and parts of Europe and Asia.
Damn those sixes!
